Commvault Continues To Hold Its Leader Position In The 2020 Gartner Magic Quadrant For Backup And Recovery

This is news I never get tired of receiving: Commvault is top ranked across all use cases in Gartner’s 2020 Critical Capabilities for Backup and Recovery Report and has again been named a Leader in Gartner’s 2020 Magic Quadrant for Data Center Backup and Recovery Solutions. This is the ninth time Commvault has achieved the Leader position and, according to Gartner, it is also the first time any vendor has scored highest across all use cases in this Critical Capabilities report.

Gartner recognized the breadth of Commvault’s product portfolio with support for the broadest range of applications, databases, public cloud environments, OSs and hypervisors, NAS systems and primary storage arrays out of all vendors evaluated in this report. It also noted that as of March 2020, Commvault protects the largest number of public cloud VM instances of any vendor in the Magic Quadrant. This is critical as customers continue on their cloud journey and rely on Commvault to protect their workloads.

Most of us are familiar with the Gartner Magic Quadrant and its evaluation methodology across two components: ability to execute and completeness of vision. Similarly, The Critical Capabilities report evaluates the vendor’s technology across the most common use cases Gartner has identified as being a priority for customers. In our case, this is support for: physical server environments, virtual environments and public cloud environments. Commvault received the highest scores of any vendor across all of those use cases, including a score of 4.15 out of 5 for the public cloud use case. Like I said previously, Commvault is a clear leader in this cloud game!

The report also noted that Commvault has also been successful in helping customers transition from traditional perpetual-licensing models to subscription-based licensing, which aligns with customers’ aspirations to shift toward convenient OPEX-based and cloud-like pricing. Other notable points made about Commvault include:

  • Ransomware and anomaly detection capabilities, along with backup validation tools that provide rapid recovery, which was noted as a differentiator by Gartner.
  • Ecosystem support – Commvault integrates with the highest number of primary storage array, cloud and application vendors evaluated in this report. It also supports several tape libraries and on-premises and public cloud object storage platforms.
  • DBaaS support – Commvault supports several DBaaS platforms, including AWS RDS, AWS Redshift, AWS DynamoDB, Azure SQL, Azure SQL managed database and Google Cloud PostGreSQL and MySQL. It also supports migration of on-premises database onto these cloud platforms.

I believe all of this is validation of our continued commitment to helping customers with the strongest product portfolio in the market, and our unwavering commitment to innovation.

According to Gartner, Magic Quadrant Leaders have “the highest combined measures of ability to execute and completeness of vision. They have the most comprehensive and scalable product portfolios. They have a proven track record of established market presence and financial performance. For vision, they are perceived in the industry as thought leaders, and have well-articulated plans for enhancing recovery capabilities, improving ease of deployment and administration, and increasing their scalability and product breadth. A fundamental sea change is occurring in the backup and recovery market.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself.
